Hays is busting with new businesses, new ownerships and remodeling/renovating of existing businesses all over town!
The brand new Hays Welcome Center and office complex is now open at the corner of 27th and Vine! This building is home of the Hays Convention and Visitor Bureau, Hays Area Chamber of Commerce, Ellis County Coalition and Downtown Hays Development Corporation. This building was funded by a grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation and the local hotel/motel “bed” tax. The new welcome center is a great convenient location for visitors and residents to stop and check out all the Hays happenings 24 hours a day.
The vacated building at 1301 Pine is now home to new owners Vibe Energetics.
Some of the new restaurants now calling Hays their home include the new Bar-B-Cutie restaurant located on the corner of East 27th and Indian Trail, El Dos De Oros Mexican Restaurante just to the north of I-70 and Papa Murphy’s just west of Vine on 27th. Mr. Goodcents at 1901 Vine recently reopened under new ownership and management and Coffee Rules opened their 2nd location at 1011 Elm, near the FHSU campus.
North of I-70 is rapidly growing with the recently opened Sleep Inn, Hampton Inn and IHOP near the Home Depot. Construction is underway on a brand new Best Western Butterfield in the same vicinity. Nex-Tech Wireless, Xibit Customs and Alltel Beringer Communications are located at the corner of 41st and Vine. Lewis Chrysler Dodge Jeep is now in their new building on the eastside of Vine and Carrico Implement Co. Inc. is now in their newly constructed business to the northwest of Wal-Mart. Pay Day Loans has recently opened their doors next to Beond Salon-Day Spa and Radio Shack. Sunflower Bank’s new branch building located at the corner of 48th and Vine.
Travel south on Vine and you will find new businesses Couture for Men in the Centennial Mall, Hot Headz Salon and Advanced Satellites located near Master Cleaners, Kisner Auction / Purple Wave Auction on the corner of Vine and Downing, Vintage Barber Shop near 22nd and Vine, Davidson Chiropractic Clinic at their new location of 1905 Vine, Sicoir Computer Technologies store at 1409 Vine and Advantage Glass’s new location at 1005 Vine. In the Mall you will find two new tenants: Stage, located on the north end as well 1904 Clothing.
Other new construction across town includes new apartments at 5th and Main, rapidly expanding housing developments north of 41st Street as well as the east side of Hays and the recently completed USD 489 bus barn at 6th and Main. Fort Hays State University has completed their extensive renovation of the Union and completion of the brand new Robbins Center, which is home to the FHSU Foundation and Alumni Association near Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Ellis County Fairgrounds also completed renovations on the Schenk and Gold Buildings. Both buildings are now air conditioned and equipped with kitchens. The space between the buildings was revamped with yet another kitchen and large meeting area. By making use of the space, the buildings are now connected and can be used to hold a greater number of attendees for larger events.
The Downtown Hays Development Corporation is pleased to have the Fox Pavilion which features movies and games on their giant screen, host to seminars and conventions, and a venue for weddings and receptions. The specialty gift store, Bildschon House, at 11th and Main, has expanded and has opened Bildschon Baby. The Dennis Schiel Studio and Gallery has made a home in Downtown Hays. The studio sells fine art supplies and hosts art classes on East 11th. Across the street another great treasure, the Hays Arts Council, is expanding. Downtown Hays Development Corporation recently announced that Pottery Works was recently sold and has reopened their doors. The historic Weisner building at 8th and Main has undergone renovations inside and out and is now home to Northglen Antiques. Downtown watering holes the Brass Rail and Wild Rose have also been busy completing renovations. After renovations to the building, Main Street Express opened their doors at 1601 Main, offering a homey and warm atmosphere.
The city of Ellis is excited with the brand new Ellis Travel Plaza just south of I-70 on Washington. The Travel Plaza is home to a gas station/convenience store, as well as Dairy Queen and Subway restaurants. A new pet grooming business, named 4 Paws Salon opened in Ellis this past February.
As you can see, Ellis County is undergoing some great changes and growth!
